Years ago, when I was busy capturing weddings, a friend wanted help to boost her organic teas business – Cottage Botanicals that she had set up on Etsy. As a photographer I knew how providing visually consistent and recognizable imagery could do wonders for sales – be they on a website, print media, Etsy, Instagram, Facebook, etc.
While I provided the lighting, my photographer’s eye, skills/experience, and the equipment of course my client came well prepared with all the props and materials needed to style her tea products. Prop elements were brought in to convey the flavours and feelings the product would evoke for customers.
In this case, styling the tea product with prop elements provided a clear expression of tea’s flavour and state of mind the tea would evoke. Look closely at the sample images included in this post. This is key to helping customers make online decisions quickly.
I’m happy to say that once the tea photos were posted, her tea business achieved a big boost to her online sales shop. This is what professional product photography can help you achieve.
While this case shows the power of styling, it should be said that not all products need a lot of prop setup! Depending on your business clientele and your target market, you may need a clean look with minimal props, with your photography providing a clear expression with composition, lighting and display arrangement. We may just have to post another case study to show you an example, so we hope to see you again soon.
