How to Get Ready for Your Headshot!

Your professional headshot is your first impression – a visual handshake that establishes your credibility in your field. As how you present speaks to your professionalism, it’s a wonder so many people have mediocre profile photos taken with a smartphone or have a terribly out-of-date headshot. Because first impressions are so important, keeping your headshot current shows people how seriously you take yourself, and the work you do.

Being well-prepared for your session will ensure we capture

that enviable photo where you look your very best.

Here are some practical

tips we’ve given clients

over the years that always

achieve great results:

  • To start, we’ll book your session at a time of day everyone looks their best – between 10am and 3pm.
  • Be sure to get plenty of sleep the night before so you can look fresh and rested in your photo. If you have a workout the day before, make it a light one.
  • Book a hair blow-out/styling session with your stylist just before your booking – they’ll give you that controlled, voluminous, shiny look that is so very flattering. We ask men to do this as well! Flat hair doesn’t work for anyone.
  • Clothing should be upscale business attire, with solid, neutral colours – navy, black, grey jackets paired with white collared shirts or blouses.
  • Bring a few different outfits to your session! We are great at helping you choose the best combination for your skin tone and body type.
  • Ensure your clothing is freshly dry-cleaned and ironed,
  • Arrive to your session 10 minutes early so we can help you select the best look,
  • If you can coordinate your organization’s corporate colours with your clothing, all the better
  • Make-up should be simple and appear light, blended well along your hairline, neck and necklines. Your skin should have an even appearance with no shiny areas.
  • Jewellery is acceptable – select understated pieces appropriate for your profession. The goal is to keep the attention on your face.
  • Get yourself in a great mood before arriving for your session, listen to your favourite music, call a friend that always makes you laugh – it will show in your photo.
  • Practice your smile and poses in the mirror! Displaying confidence in your manner is always a plus
  • Lastly, trust your photographer – it’s their job to make you look great and they know what the camera likes even if it feels odd or awkward at first. We’ll show you the results we’re getting while we shoot and you get to select the final photo(s) before you leave.
